Graduated from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara in 1994. Completed my residency in psychiatry at Gazi University Department of Psychiatry between 1997-2002. I was an observer at Department of Geriatric Psychiatry for 6 months at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, USA.

I have completed my clinical fellowship of geriatric psychiatry at Saint Louis University Department of Geriatric Psychiatry between 2004- 2005, Saint Louis, MO, USA.

I have been working at Hacettepe University Department of Psychiatry since 2009. I am the director of geriatric psychiatry outpatient clinic. My areas of interest are psychiatric disorders in elderly, differential diagnosis of depression and dementia, dementias, neuropsychological evaluation, and social psychiatry in old age.

I was the president of Alzheimer Association of Turkey, Ankara district,  between 2015-2017. And I was the president of Geropsychiatry Working Group of Turkish Psychiatric Association between 2020-2025.

Prof. Elena Moore

I am a Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town. I obtained a Wellcome Career Award, 2023-2028 to develop and grow a research programme in Family Caregiving of Older Persons in Southern Africa (www.familycaregiving.org.za). This is the first multi-sited qualitative longitudinal study on family caregiving in Africa. We run an extensive policy engagement programme which was recently awarded an IDRC Scaling Care Innovations in Africa Award 2024-2027 for a linked project on: ‘Transforming Elder Care through Collective Policy Action in Southern Africa (2024-2027).  I am a recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award 2021, as well as the Vice Chancellor Social Responsiveness Award, University of Cape Town, 2023.

Dr. Leon Geffen

Dr. Leon Geffen is a family physician based in Cape Town, South Africa. He is the director of the Samson Institute For Ageing Research. He serves as an expert advisor to the WHO Clinical Consortium on Healthy Ageing & the WHO Global Network on Long-term Care. He is the chairperson of the World Organisation of Family Doctors Ageing & Health Special Interest Group. In 2022, he was named by WHO as one of 50 global leaders working to transform the world to be a better place to grow old.”  

Dr. Femada Shamam

Femada Shamam is the Chief Executive Officer of The Association for the Aged (TAFTA), one of the largest non-profit organizations in South Africa dedicated to supporting older persons. With a background in social work and management, she brings a balanced approach to designing and implementing services that uphold the dignity, rights, and well-being of older people.With 25 years of experience in the ageing sector, Femada has worked across multiple domains, including direct service delivery, policy development, community engagement, strategic planning, and research. She is continuing her own development through the Optentia Research Unit at North-West University, South Africa.
Femada is a recognized leader in the field of ageing, serving as the Vice Chairperson of the  Commonwealth Association for the Ageing (CommonAge) and as Vice Chairperson of the Global Ageing Network. She has presented extensively on ageing-related issues at international conferences hosted by the International Federation on Ageing, CommonAge, and the Global Ageing Network.
Her advocacy work includes a strong focus on elder rights and protection. Under her leadership, TAFTA launched a national toll-free elder abuse helpline in South Africa in November 2022, which has since received over 3,000 calls, highlighting the urgent need for intervention and support in cases of elder abuse. She actively collaborates with stakeholders to strengthen safeguarding mechanisms and ensure older persons have access to justice and protection.
On a national level, she is involved in policy advocacy and the promotion of age-friendly communities, emphasizing the inclusion of older persons in shaping their environments. She is also deeply committed to workforce development in geriatrics and gerontology, particularly in leadership capacity-building for professionals working in aged care.

Femada’s expertise and insights offer valuable perspectives on the challenges and solutions related to elder abuse, safeguarding, and the evolving landscape of ageing care in South Africa.

Dr. Fiona Ecarnot

Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Fiona Ecarnot works as a research engineer at the Cardiology Department of the University Hospital of Besançon, France. She received an MSc in biostatistics and epidemiology from the University of Franche-Comté, Besançon, and obtained a PhD at the same university in 2019 in the field of cardiovascular sciences, focussing in particular on the use of qualitative research methods in the field of cardiology. Her research areas include vaccines, geriatrics and gerontology, ethics in healthcare, palliative care and end-of-life issues. She has authored or co-authored over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals, plus numerous book chapters.

Prof. Joël Belmin

Joël Belmin is Professor of Geriatrics at Sorbonne University in Paris. He coordinates a number of geriatrics and gerontology courses at Sorbonne Université, including the Master 2 Expertise in Gerontology speciality (Master Santé), the Capacité de Gérontologie, and 16 university diplomas covering specific areas of gerontology and geriatrics, some of which relate to Alzheimer’s disease. He runs the Trans-Innov Longévité programme for Sorbonne University, which focuses on teaching gerontology using innovative teaching methods that incorporate digital technology and distance learning. He has coordinated several books on geriatrics, including Gériatrie (collection pour le praticien, Elsevier/Masson, 2018) and Gériatrie du Collège National des Enseignants-Chercheurs de Gériatrie (collection référentiels des collèges, Elsevier/Masson, 2014). He heads the neuro-psychogeriatric geriatrics department at Hôpital Charles Foix in Ivry-sur-Seine and coordinates the hospital’s geriatrics unit. Dr. Tareq Qassem
Dr. Tareq Qassem is a consultant psychiatrist specializing in old age psychiatry. He leads the Mental Health of Older Age Clinical Academic Group at Maudsley Health, Dubai, and serves as an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Mohammed Bin Rashid University. Additionally, he holds an Honorary Consultant position at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
 
With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Qassem established the first older adults mental health service in the UAE. His work has been published in reputable journals, and he has played a key role in developing postgraduate educational programs.
 
Dr. Qassem has been recognized by the UK Royal College of Psychiatrists and has received awards for his contributions to mental healthcare and innovation.

Prof. Rosette Farrugia-Bonello
Rosette Farrugia-Bonello is Deputy Director at the International Institute on Ageing, United Nations-Malta (INIA).  Previously she worked as Co-ordinator at Caritas Malta HelpAge (1996-1999) and as Executive Director of the European Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing (EAHSA), Brussels, Belgium (2012-2015). Rosette graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Communication studies and with a Post-Graduate in Gerontology and Geriatrics from the University of Malta. Part of her undergraduate studies were conducted at Clarion University in Pennsylvania, USA. Rosette also holds a Master of Science in Dementia Studies from the University of Stirling, Scotland, and is a certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional (CMDCP). Over the past years, Rosette has actively engaged with various educational initiatives and human capacity-building training programmes on ageing. Her global reach extends to countries such as China, Dominican Republic, Georgia, India, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Nepal and United Arab Emirates.  Rosette has served as a programme coordinator with the University of the Fourth Age (U4A) in Malta, serves as an honorary member of TATA Institute of Social Sciences, India (TISS); chief editor of INIA’s International Journal on Ageing in Developing Countries and Vice-President of the Maltese Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (MAGG). Her research interests are in dementia studies, healthy and active ageing and ageism.

Prof. Nicola Veronese

Nicola Veronese is a certified trained geriatrician, currently working as Associate Editor in Internal Medicine at the University of Palermo, Italy. His research is mainly epidemiological and focused on the most common diseases affecting older people. In particular, his interest areas are osteoarticular, metabolic (including obesity and diabetes) and cardiovascular diseases, as well as nutrition. He is the author of more than 500 articles published in national and international scientific journals, and of numerous abstracts accepted by national and international congresses.

Prof. Meram Bekhet

Dr. Meram Bekhet is a Professor of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Diabetes at Ain Shams University and serves as Head of the Endocrine & Diabetes Department at the Armed Forces College of Medicine. She is a co-Founder and director of cognitive training lab, co-founder, and co-director of Ain-Shams Ageing Brain Initiative (AGE-BRAIN) at Geriatric department, Ain-Shams University Hospitals. Prof. Dilek Aslan

Dr. Aslan is working as a full professor of Public Health (PH) at Hacettepe University (HU), Faculty of Medicine (FoM), Department of Public Health (DoPH) (Ankara/Turkey).

Dr. Aslan graduated from HU-FoM in 1994 and completed her compulsory medical services in different parts of the country between 1994-1996. After completing a four years’ training program at HU-FoM-DoPH, she has been a public health specialist in 2000. She completed her post doc training by conducting a 10 months’ fellowship program funded by the USA-National Institute of Health, Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Program (Fogarty International Program). In the first part of the Project, she worked in USA at a Harvard University affiliated Boston’s Children’s Hospital (From July to December 2002). During this period, she completed some courses at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Aslan also completed her MSc training at HU-Health Sciences Institute-Nutrition and Food Sciences Program in 2004.

Dr. Aslan’s main academic interests in PH are aging, community nutrition, international health, and tobacco control. Since the pandemic, she has been involved in Infodemic Management work. In this regard, she completed WHO certificated training which was held between November and December 2021. She has been appointed as a member of the Technical Advisory Group on Risk Communication and Community Engagement-Infodemic Management (RCCE-IM) in World Health Organization European Region since February 2023.

Dr. Aslan has been working in geriatrics fields with the scope of her public heath background. Her experiences started with a certified “in-situ” Geriatrics and Gerontology Training Program jointly organized by the UN International Institute on Aging (INIA) and the Turkish Geriatrics Society (TGS) in 2006. Since then, she has been involved in similar training programs as trainer (and organizer). The last program was held in 2019 in Turkey. Dr. Aslan has been organizing and/or attending several national and international congresses, symposiums, courses on geriatrics for over 15 years. She also conducts courses on aging at the academy. She has been involved in different PH Projects.

Dr. Aslan worked as an Editorial Board member of the Turkish Journal of Geriatrics between 2006 and 2019. Since March 2022, she has been involved in the Editorial Review Board for the Gerontology and Geriatrics Medicine Journal.

She has been author (or co-author) of several publications including book chapters (national, international), scientific articles, reminders for public. She has been the editor (or) the co-editor of several national books since 2007. She is also contributing the Ministry of Health studies in geriatrics in organizing workshops, protocol preparation, guideline preparation, etc.

Dr. Aslan is the General Secretary of Turkish Geriatrics Society. Her contribution to the TGS started in 2005. Since then, she has been actively involved in the activities of the Society. She also has other memberships in both professional medical organizations and NGOs.
